Madison means Family

The languages of drums, Spanish folk songs, dancing, and bagpipes filled the hallway outside the music room at Madison Elementary School. Inside talk of family, music, and traditions were communicated in a beautiful blend of English and Spanish. Madison Elementary welcomed Silk Road Ensemble artists Cristina Pato and Shane Shanahan on Tuesday, September 29th. A group of English Language Learners enjoyed a special workshop with the guests. Parents of the 14 ELL students were invited to participate in the musical workshop. Cristina and Shane shared their culture with the group and asked the same in return. Father of 5th grade student Michael shared instruments and dance from his Hispanic culture. The last moments of the workshop were spend dancing to the beat of the drums. At Madison we are all connected, not just by sharing the same name, but also through music and sharing parts of our culture with one another.
