4th Graders @ Des Moines Art Center
Madison 4th grade students took a trip to the Des Moines Art Center last week. Students used visual thinking strategies to interpret both classic and contemporary works of art. Using these VTS strategies students were able to articulate the story behind the lonely female character in Edward Hopper’s, Automat. Students made the comparison between automats and modern day vending machines. Students also learned about Roy Lichtenstein’s pop art and the way he related it to comics and newspaper printing. 4th grade students finished off the art tour in the selfie exhibit. The Des Moines Art Center displayed famous self-portraits from their permanent collection. Artists in the exhibit include Cindy Sherman, Rembrant, Kathe Kollwitz and more. The last stop was taking a group selfie in front of the Chuck Close self portrait where students cheered Madison as a picture was snapped to remember the trip.
