Teachers Learn Year Round

Learning does not stop because it is summer break. This is true for students and teachers. Madison Elementary staff members joined educators from across the United States at the Turnaround Arts National Conference. They learned about using the arts to engage, inspire, and empower the students in their classrooms. The learning centered on using a variety of art disciplines to teach content standards, and connect to student lives and interests.

Staff members at Madison Elementary chose an arts focus for the school year. The focus for the 2017-2018 school year is drama. Teachers will use drama strategies to teach skills of concentration and cooperation to build classroom community. Students will work together to create frozen pictures using their body, focal point, and facial expression and as their props. These frozen pictures are called tableaux and allow students to show understanding of a topic or concept in the classroom.
