Exploration with apples and butterflies

The first graders in Lindsay Ringleb and Jo Walker’s  classes have been using an apple theme to learn about counting to 120, for graphing, and for reading comprehension and writing.  They filled in missing numbers and had an apple tasting day where they tasted different kinds of apples and then graphed their favorites and then asked and answered questions about the graph. They also read many nonfiction text about apples, and wrote facts about apples.
As exciting as that has been, we have also been observing and learning about Monarch Caterpillars and Butterflies!  We took care of caterpillars and watched them eat milkweed, form their chrysalis, and emerge into beautiful butterflies!  We read books and asked and answered questions about them, observed them and wrote about what we noticed, and then let our beautiful butterflies go when they were ready!
First Grade is so much fun and we are learning so much!
