Role and Risk of Social Media in Building Positive Relationships

One thing that has been on my mind a lot lately is the role and risk of social media in the world today.  I would never want to suggest that I am an expert on this topic, but I have had a few experiences that have really opened my eyes to how risky social media can be.  Kids do not always understand the power of their words and when they are written down their thoughts can be taken out of context shared with others.  Along with this, social media can provide children with a way to communicate something about a peer that they may feel in the moment, but not at all times.  This can also be taken out of context.

If you choose to let your child have access to social media, I would encourage you to spend a lot of time talking to your child about the risk of posting negative comments.  I would also encourage you to talk to them about examples of using social media to communicate a positive message to the world.  Finally, it is essential that these accounts are monitored by parents.
