Helping Your Child Build Positive Relationships at School

Social Skill for this Week: Using Good Manners

As February begins and the cold continues, it can be a real challenge getting your child to school on time.  However, one reason it is essential to make sure this happens in your house, is that it really helps kids maintain positive relationships with their classmates and teacher.

There are a few reasons for that getting to school on time helps kids build positive relationships.  First, having a predictable morning routine helps them settle into their work more quickly.  Knowing when you are going to get to school and what is going to be happening when you arrive is an essential part of feeling this comfort.  Second, many of the activities we do first thing in the morning are designed to build relationships.  For example, we greet students at their classroom door, have them eat breakfast together, and then hold a morning meeting about the upcoming day.

Missing this portion of the day, makes it much harder for your child to develop positive relationships with kids and adults at school.  Please remember the importance of keeping a morning routine that ends with your child getting to school on time.

Thanks,

Mr. Heaberlin
